NISM V-A Eligibility: Qualifications, Age Limit & Other Requirements

Key takeaways

  • No degree or finance background needed. NISM sets no education or age requirement to sit the V-A exam.
  • You need to be 18 for an ARN. That rule comes from AMFI, so if you’re younger, take the exam close to your 18th birthday to get full use of the 3-year certificate.
  • Keep your PAN and Aadhaar handy. You need your PAN to get the certificate, and both to apply for your ARN.
  • Eligible isn’t the same as ready. You need 50 out of 100 in two hours, so mock tests and structured prep matter.

NISM Series V-A is the certification you need to distribute mutual funds in India. It’s also one of the easiest finance credentials to qualify for. Yet homemakers, retired teachers and engineering graduates often hold back, thinking they need a commerce or finance degree. They don’t.

NISM sets no minimum education and no minimum age for the exam. The real conditions come one step later, when you apply to AMFI for your ARN. Then you must be at least 18 and verify your identity with your PAN and Aadhaar.

Being eligible and being ready to pass are two different things, though. This guide covers both.

NISM V-A Eligibility at a Glance

Most confusion online comes from mixing up two separate sets of rules: NISM's rules for sitting the exam and AMFI's rules for registering as a distributor. Here they are side by side.

Requirement To sit the NISM V-A exam To get an ARN from AMFI
Education None specified None specified, but you need a valid NISM V-A certificate
Minimum age Not stated by NISM 18 years
Upper age limit None None stated
Finance or commerce background Not required Not required
PAN Needed to receive your certificate Required
Aadhaar Not listed in NISM's FAQ Required for online registration and KYD

The exam itself costs ₹1,500. You answer 100 multiple-choice questions in 2 hours, need 50% to pass, and lose nothing for wrong answers. Your certificate is valid for 3 years from the exam date (NISM FAQ).

What NISM Actually Says About Who Can Take the Exam

NISM's official FAQ for the Series V-A exam lists three groups who can sit it:

  • People already working or planning to work in the sale or distribution of mutual funds, whatever their title (distributor, agent, broker, sub-broker)
  • Interested students and professionals
  • "Any other individuals"

NISM's eligibility criteria for V-A contain no degree, no percentage cut-off, no subject requirement and no stated age. NISM made this exam the required standard for anyone selling mutual funds back in May 2010, and it has kept the door open to the public ever since.

NISM Qualification Required: Do You Need a Degree?

No. There is no graduation requirement for NISM Series V-A, and there is no requirement for a commerce, economics or finance background. A homemaker, a retired schoolteacher, an engineering student and a bank cashier all register through the same form and sit the same 100 questions.

Can a 12th-pass candidate take the NISM exam?

Yes. A 12th pass NISM exam candidate is fully eligible for V-A. In fact, NISM doesn't name any schooling level at all, so formal qualifications simply aren't part of the test for entry.

Can you take it while you're still in college?

Yes. Nothing in NISM's rules stops you. Just read the age section below before you book, because the timing of your exam affects how much of your certificate you can actually use.

What the exam assumes instead

NISM doesn't ask for a degree, but the syllabus does expect a few things from you:

  • Reading stamina. The official workbook covers 12 chapters, from the investment landscape to scheme selection. You'll need to read it closely, not skim it.
  • Comfort with percentages. Calculating NAV, understanding the expense ratio and comparing returns all involve basic arithmetic.
  • Patience with rules. A large share of the syllabus covers SEBI regulations, AMFI's code of conduct and the taxation of mutual funds. These are memorised, not reasoned out.

Minimum Age for NISM V-A: Where the 18-Year Rule Comes From

NISM doesn't state a minimum age for NISM V-A. The 18-year rule you keep reading about comes from AMFI. AMFI says an individual applying for an ARN must be at least 18, hold a Valid NISM V-A certificate, and provide PAN and Aadhaar to complete registration and Know Your Distributor (KYD) checks. From 1 October 2024, individuals can apply for a fresh ARN only online (AMFI).

Without an ARN, fund houses can't deal with you as a distributor. So in practice, 18 is the age at which your certificate becomes useful.

Why timing matters if you're under 18

Your certificate is valid for 3 years from the exam date, and the clock starts the day you pass. Say you sit the exam at 16. You'll wait two years before AMFI will register you, and by then two-thirds of your certificate's life is gone.

The smarter move is to learn early and sit the exam a few months before your 18th birthday. That way you get almost the full three years of use.

Is there an upper age limit?

No. Neither NISM nor AMFI sets a maximum age. Retirees can be a natural fit for distribution, since they often bring time, patience and a network of people who trust them. You renew your certificate every three years, either through NISM's Continuing Professional Education (CPE) programme or by passing the exam again before it expires.

What You Need to Register and Get Your Certificate

The paperwork is light, but the order matters.

  1. Create an account on NISM's certification portal (cert.nism.ac.in), choose Series V-A, pay the ₹1,500 fee, and pick a test centre, date and time slot.
  2. Enter your PAN when you register. NISM sends the certificate only to candidates who gave their PAN. Others get just a temporary mark sheet, though you can submit your PAN later at no extra cost.
  3. Download the free workbook. NISM emails a soft copy after you enrol, and you can also download it from the NISM website.
  4. Sit the exam at your chosen test centre. It's a computer-based test, and your score appears at the end.
  5. Apply for your ARN online on the AMFI portal with your NISM certificate, PAN and Aadhaar. Check the current ARN fee on amfiindia.com before you pay.

Eligible Is Not Prepared: The Readiness Gap

Here's the plain truth: the bar to enter the NISM V-A exam is about as low as it gets. The bar to pass it is not.

You'll face 100 questions in 120 minutes, which works out to about 72 seconds per question. You need 50 correct answers. NISM doesn't re-evaluate scores, and a second attempt means booking and paying for the exam again.

Rahul's story is a common one (he's an illustrative example, not a real candidate). A sales executive in Pune, he read online that "anyone can apply" and booked a slot for the following Saturday. He'd read the first two chapters of the workbook. By question 30, he was guessing at expense ratio calculations and SEBI rules he'd never seen.

Rahul was eligible. He just wasn't ready.

Where first-time aspirants tend to slip

If you're new to finance, these four areas of the NISM syllabus usually take the most work:

  • Legal and regulatory framework: the roles of SEBI and AMFI, investor grievance redressal and the AMFI code of conduct
  • NAV, total expense ratio and pricing: how a scheme's NAV is calculated and how loads and expenses affect it
  • Taxation: capital gains, dividend income, TDS and stamp duty on mutual fund units
  • Distribution practices: how commission is disclosed and the difference between a distributor and an investment adviser

The six most common NISM V-A preparation mistakes are worth reading before you book, too. Then take the self-assessment below.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What are the NISM V-A eligibility criteria?
NISM sets no minimum education, age or finance background for Series V-A. Students, working professionals and anyone else can register, pay the ₹1,500 fee and sit the exam at a NISM test centre.

2. Do I need a degree to take NISM V-A?
No. There is no graduation requirement for NISM Series V-A. NISM prescribes no educational qualification, so 12th-pass candidates, homemakers and graduates from any stream register for and sit the same exam.

3. What is the minimum age for NISM V-A?
NISM states there is no minimum age for the exam itself. However, AMFI requires you to be at least 18 to obtain an ARN, so your certificate becomes usable for distribution only at 18.

4. Can a 12th-pass candidate take the NISM exam?
Yes. A 12th-pass candidate is fully eligible for NISM Series V-A. The exam tests your knowledge of the official workbook, not your school marks, your subjects or any prior academic qualification.

5. Is there an upper age limit for NISM V-A?
No. Neither NISM nor AMFI sets a maximum age. Retirees and senior professionals can take the exam, obtain an ARN and work as mutual fund distributors at any stage of life.

6. Do I need a PAN card for NISM V-A?

The exam has 100 multiple-choice questions, each worth one mark, to be completed in two hours. The pass mark is 50%, and there is no negative marking for wrong answers.

10. How long is the NISM V-A certificate valid?
The certificate is valid for three years from the exam date. You renew it before it expires by attending NISM's Continuing Professional Education (CPE) programme or by passing the exam again.
