‍India’s PMS Industry Has Crossed ₹44 Lakh Crore: Why Finance Professionals Should Pay Attention

India’s Portfolio Management Services (PMS) industry is expanding as the country’s wealth ecosystem becomes more sophisticated, and as the investors it serves grow in both number and financial complexity.

In July 2026, assets reported by portfolio managers stood at ₹44.11 lakh crore, with more than 2.23 lakh client accounts. Total AUM grew 2.0% month-on-month, while the client base increased 1.3%.

What’s Behind the ₹44 Lakh Crore?

The headline number requires context.

Around ₹33.07 lakh crore of the reported PMS AUM in July 2026 came from PF/EPFO investments, a large institutional allocations managed under a separate framework. The remaining approximately ₹11.04 lakh crore represents non-PF/EPFO AUM.

This is the segment most relevant to aspiring PMS distributors. It reflects the broader pool of assets managed for individual investors, the HNIs, UHNIs and affluent households whose portfolios are becoming increasingly sophisticated.

India’s High Net-worth Individuals (HNIs) population is projected to double to 1.65 million by 2027, while the Ultra High Net-worth Individuals (UHNIs) population is expected to grow 50% by 2028. A larger affluent population creates a wider base of investors who may seek professionally managed, customised investment solutions.

The opportunity is also largely domestic. Domestic investors account for approximately 91% of PMS clients and around 95% of PMS AUM, reflecting India's own wealth creation as the primary driver of the ecosystem's growth.

A Growing Ecosystem for Finance Professionals

The expansion isn't limited to assets and investors. The distribution side of the PMS ecosystem is gaining momentum too.

As of July 2026, there were 21,650 individual PMS distributors, 3,144 non-individual distributors, and 534 portfolio managers.

The distribution network is also gaining momentum. 1,226 individual and 181 non-individual distributors were added in July alone, taking FY27 additions to 3,459 individual and 537 non-individual distributors.

Together, these numbers point to an ecosystem expanding not just in assets, but also in portfolio managers and distribution capacity, creating more avenues for finance professionals to participate in the PMS value chain.

From Product Distribution to Wealth Conversations

India's investor journey has been moving through a recognisable progression:

Saving → Investing → Diversifying → Evolving

As portfolios grow and investor expectations become more sophisticated, finance professionals who understand multiple investment products and portfolio-level decision-making can be better positioned for the next phase of the wealth ecosystem.

For many professionals, PMS can be more than another product category. It can be an opportunity to deepen client relationships and participate in more sophisticated wealth conversations.

But participating in this segment requires more than an understanding of investments. It requires knowledge of the PMS ecosystem, regulations, portfolio management processes and investor suitability.

That brings the question: where can finance professionals start?
