NISM Series V-D: The New Pathway to Mutual Fund & SIF Distribution

What if one certification could change the way you enter the next category of investment products?

Until now, professionals looking to distribute Mutual Funds and expand into Specialised Investment Funds (SIFs) followed separate certification pathways (NISM V-A & NISM XIII).

That has now changed.

From 22 July 2026, NISM Series V-D became the common certification pathway for professionals looking to distribute both Mutual Funds and SIFs. The new certification brings the required knowledge for both categories into a single examination.

The timing is significant. SIFs are gaining momentum in India's investment landscape, with SIF AUM crossing ₹23,000 Cr in July 2026, up 29% from the previous month, with positive inflows of ₹4,922 Cr. At the same time, there are fewer than 10,000 AMFI-registered SIF distributors.

For MFDs, this creates an opportunity to build SIF expertise early and prepare to serve an evolving investor segment.

So, what exactly has changed with NISM Series V-D? And what does this new certification mean for professionals looking to expand their distribution expertise?

To understand this, let’s first look at why SIFs are emerging as an important category for distributors.

Understanding SIFs

As investors become more sophisticated, their expectations from investment products are evolving too.

SIFs are designed for experienced and high-net-worth investors looking for advanced investment strategies with the same trust and transparency that define India’s mutual fund industry. With a minimum investment of ₹10 lakh, SIFs occupy a distinct space in the investment landscape, offering more specialised strategies within a regulated framework.

For existing MFDs, this opens the door to new client conversations.

But serving these evolving investor needs requires an understanding of how SIFs work, the strategies they use, and the risks involved.

That's where the new V-D certification comes in.

What Does NISM Series V-D Cover?

The V-D examination goes beyond traditional mutual fund concepts to introduce distributors to areas relevant to more sophisticated investment strategies.

The syllabus covers knowledge across Mutual Funds, Equity Derivatives and Interest Rate Derivatives, including areas such as futures and options and fixed-income derivatives.

In other words, V-D is not simply another certification. It broadens the knowledge base required for evolving product and investor conversations.

But does every existing MFD need to take this new exam?

Who Needs to Take NISM Series V-D?

This is where the change becomes particularly relevant for distributors.

Existing MFDs who already hold valid NISM Series V-A and NISM Series XIII certifications do not need to immediately take NISM V-D. Their existing certifications continue to remain valid for their respective validity periods.

However, for professionals entering mutual fund distribution today or looking to qualify for SIF distribution under the new framework, NISM Series V-D provides a single certification pathway covering both categories.

The shift is simple:

Earlier

NISM V-A → Mutual Fund Distribution
NISM XIII → SIF Distribution

Now

NISM V-D → Mutual Fund + SIF Distribution

What This Means for MFDs

The introduction of V-D represents more than a change in certification.

For distributors, it can mean:

  • One certification pathway for Mutual Funds and SIFs
  • Broader product knowledge across traditional and specialised investment products
  • An opportunity to build SIF distribution capability
  • Better preparation for evolving investor needs

As SIFs continue to develop as a category, building the right knowledge early can help MFDs prepare for new product and investor conversations.
